‘Lanterns’ TV Show: Everything We Know So Far
DC Studios’ upcoming Green Lantern series, Lanterns, is shaping up to be a major part of their new DC Universe. Co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran have promised a show comparable to True Detective in its scope and quality. With Hal Jordan and John Stewart taking center stage, this series aims to unravel a mystery that will connect to the larger DCU story. Recent rumors hint at an impressive creative team, including Chris Mundy and Damon Lindelof, though nothing is officially confirmed yet. Gunn’s cryptic emoji updates on social media suggest that progress is being made.

Other potential team members include Justin Britt-Gibson, Breannah Gibson, and Vanessa Baden Kelly. It’s also rumored that Mundy could serve as showrunner, with Lindelof as an executive producer. However, nothing is certain yet, and we await official announcements.
The Original Green Lantern Project
Before Gunn and Safran took over, there was another Green Lantern project in development. This earlier series was set to star Finn Wittrock and Jeremy Irvine and span decades, starting in 1941 with Alan Scott and in 1984 with Guy Gardner.
The original show was supposed to feature multiple Green Lanterns, including Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz, Sinestro, and Kilowog. However, the project was shelved after leadership changes at Warner Bros. Discovery, and the focus shifted to John Stewart.
Refocusing on Hal Jordan and John Stewart
After the departure of Walter Hamada from Warner Bros. Discovery, the Green Lantern series was refocused. The new direction centers on Hal Jordan and John Stewart, moving away from the ensemble cast originally planned.
James Gunn and Peter Safran decided to make the series a crucial part of their new DCU. They described it as a ‘huge HBO-quality event’ that will play a significant role in the overarching story of their film and television universe.
Production Status and Release Window
Lanterns is still in the early stages of production. James Gunn has teased progress through social media updates, using emojis to hint at developments.
The series doesn’t have a fixed release date yet. However, it’s expected to premiere on HBO Max sometime after the release of Gunn’s Superman reboot, Superman: Legacy, in July 2025.
Plot and Tone
The plot of Lanterns will focus on a detective-style story featuring Hal Jordan and John Stewart. Gunn has compared the series to True Detective, indicating a crime/mystery genre.
The show will primarily take place on Earth, setting it apart from other cosmic adventures. The mystery they investigate will have major implications for the rest of the DCU, making this series a pivotal piece of the new universe.
Comic Origins of Hal Jordan and John Stewart
Hal Jordan is known as the original human member of the Green Lantern Corps. He was chosen by the dying alien Abin Sur to wield the powerful green ring, allowing him to create anything he imagines.
John Stewart, on the other hand, was a marine before becoming a Green Lantern. His bravery and strong moral compass made him an ideal candidate for the Corps, and he eventually became a prominent member of the Justice League.
Both characters have rich histories in the comics. Hal Jordan has battled numerous villains, including his former mentor Sinestro, while John Stewart’s journey took him from Earth to the Guardians of the Universe, the council that oversees the Green Lantern Corps.
Cast and Characters
The cast for Lanterns has not been announced yet. We are still waiting to see who will portray Hal Jordan and John Stewart in this highly anticipated series.
Given the scope and importance of the show, the casting choices will be crucial in bringing these iconic characters to life and ensuring the success of the series in the new DC Universe.
