Leslye Headland Believes ‘The Acolyte’ Final Fight Scene Tops ‘The Phantom Menace’ and ‘The Matrix’
Leslye Headland, the showrunner for ‘The Acolyte’, has stirred up excitement by claiming that the series’ final fight scene surpasses those in iconic films such as ‘The Matrix’ and ‘Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace’. She shared her thoughts in a discussion with Maggie Lovitt of Collider, expressing confidence that this battle could be the most memorable in both the series and Hollywood history.
The climactic duel features Sith Qimir and Jedi Master Sol at the Brendok ruins, a location previously significant to a space witch coven in the series. This fight scene is noted for its emotional depth, stemming from the characters’ romantic and parental connections to Osha. With maneuvers like lightsaber throws and quick, anime-style movements, it’s designed to be visually clear and engaging for us viewers.
In her interview, Headland mentioned that the idea to focus the series finale on Qimir versus Sol came unexpectedly late in production. Initially, Qimir wasn’t even supposed to appear in the final episode. However, after seeing Manny Jacinto, who portrays Qimir, practicing his fight choreography, Headland felt compelled to revise the script. She joked about causing ‘riots in the streets’ if she didn’t deliver this showdown.
Dafne Keen, who plays Jecki Lon, echoed the sentiment in a talk with Entertainment Weekly, emphasizing the team’s goal to outdo the Darth Maul duel from ‘The Phantom Menace’, celebrated as one of the most iconic in the Star Wars saga. She highlighted the original feel and intricate skill involved in the lightsaber battles, which they hoped would resonate strongly with us.
Headland’s bold approach and last-minute changes aim to cement ‘The Acolyte’ in our memories as a standout series with one of the greatest fight scenes ever crafted. As viewers, it’s up to us to decide if they’ve succeeded, but the ambition and passion behind it are certainly clear.
