Leslye Headland Discusses Including Darth Plagueis in ‘The Acolyte’ Finale
‘The Acolyte’ wrapped up its debut season this week. It faced several challenges, but appearances from iconic characters like Darth Plagueis brought some redemption. In the last episode, a mysterious figure observed characters Osha and Qimir from the shadows of a cave. Given when and where the story takes place, we figured out that Darth Plagueis was added to the mix.
Darth Plagueis, known as Emperor Palpatine’s mentor, is a central figure in Sith lore, famous for his quest for immortality. This quest is a crucial part of the storyline where Palpatine tells Anakin about him to lure Anakin to the dark side. Although Plagueis is killed by his pupil, his influence continues, especially in ‘The Acolyte,’ which is set in 132 BBY, before the prequel films.
Leslye Headland, the show’s creator, spoke with IndieWire about why she included Plagueis right up to the last episode. She said that he was meant to overshadow Qimirโs and Osha’s victorious moment, adding a layer of complexity to the finale. Initially, Headland thought about ending the show with Plagueis as the final image but decided against it to maintain the focus on Oshaโs success and alliance with The Stranger.
Headland also shared that Plagueisโ presence hints at a dark fate for Osha and Qimir. While they stand ready to face new challenges, their journey is tinged with tragedy because of the rule that there can only be two Sith lords at one time.
Headland has plans to link Plagueis more closely with Palpatine if the show gets another season. This connection is intricate and will deepen the narrative further, exploring the legacy and power struggles within the Sith order.
