Mahershala Ali Might Rejoin the MCU, But Not as Blade

Mahershala Ali’s involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has sparked excitement among fans, especially with the announcement of his role as Blade. However, there are talks that even if his portrayal as Blade doesn’t continue, we might still see Ali return to the MCU in a different character.

Before Blade, Ali played a lesser-known Marvel character named Cornell Bertram Stokes, also known as Cottonmouth, in the series associated with Marvel Television, which is no longer active. Cottonmouth was a key adversary in ‘Luke Cage’ and ‘The Defenders’.

Recent rumors hint at a potential comeback of the Defenders now that ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ is in the works. A discussion on Cosmic Circus suggested that the creators are exploring a new ensemble project similar to ‘Defenders’ but under a different name. They are considering bringing back actors Mike Colter, Finn Jones, and Krysten Ritter to reprise their roles as Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Jessica Jones, respectively. The role of Danny Rand, played by Jones, might see the most changes.

This opens up the possibility for Ali to return as Cottonmouth. While fans and Ali himself would prefer his continued role as Blade, his potential involvement in the Defenders-related project could introduce him back into the MCU in a memorable way.

The Blade project is currently facing challenges, often described as being in ‘developmental hell’, which means its future is uncertain. Despite this, Ali remains passionate about the project, dedicating considerable effort to making it happen.

The idea of seeing Ali return as Cottonmouth is not confirmed but is based on the ongoing discussions and plans within Marvel Studios. We’ll need to stay tuned to see how these plans evolve, including the fate of the Blade movie and the possible return of the Defenders in the MCU.
