Marvel Announces New, Non-Binary Hawkeye

Marvel is shaking things up in their rebooted Ultimate universe, bringing a fresh face to the role of Hawkeye. This time, Clint Barton isn’t the one wielding the bow. Instead, a new character, Charli Ramsey, steps in to take on the mantle. Charli is not only a new Hawkeye but also identifies as non-binary, a big change from what we’ve seen in the past.

The Ultimate universe’s storyline has undergone massive changes. In this world, heroes are rare because of a variant of Reed Richards, known as The Maker, who rewrote reality.

This twist in the universe means iconic moments never happened—Spider-Man wasn’t bitten by the radioactive spider, and the Fantastic Four never came together. Yet, Reed Richards still exists, this time as a good version of Doctor Doom.

As for Hawkeye, Clint Barton refused the title, leaving room for Charli to step up. Charli brings a unique perspective, not only because of their skills but also because they are from the Oglala Band of the Lakota Nation.

Writer Deniz Camp emphasized how crucial the role of queer and ‘two-spirit’ organizers was during the Standing Rock protests, and that inspiration helped shape Charli’s character.

Camp shared that Charli’s pronouns won’t be a major focus of the story, only becoming relevant when it naturally fits the narrative. This subtle approach ensures that Charli’s identity isn’t forced but remains true to who they are.

It’s clear Marvel is pushing boundaries with these changes, and while Charli’s story is just starting, there’s already speculation about whether we might see them make the leap to the MCU. With the spotlight on this new Hawkeye, we’re left wondering if Charli could become one of the standout heroes of this revamped universe.
