Marvel Faces Backlash Over Alleged Whitewashing in ‘X-Men ’97’

Marvel Studios is under fire for alleged whitewashing in the upcoming X-Men ’97 animated series. Actor Gui Agustini has been cast as the voice of Roberto Da Costa, also known as Sunspot. This news has sparked controversy because many feel that Agustini’s casting does not reflect Roberto’s Afro Brazilian heritage, which is a significant part of his character in the comics.

This situation is reminiscent of the backlash faced by Fox’s The New Mutants in 2020. Henry Zaga, who played Da Costa in the live-action film, was also criticized for being lighter-skinned than the comic book character. Director Josh Boone tried to address the controversy by stating that he chose the best actor for the role, but his comments did little to ease the discontent.

Beau DeMayo, the showrunner for X-Men ’97, has responded to the accusations of whitewashing. When accused, DeMayo, who is a person of color and identifies as queer, replied, ‘Don’t even. Look who you’re talking to. Moving on.’ His response has only intensified the discussion.

X-Men ’97 initially received praise for its casting choices, such as Alyson Court stepping down from voicing Jubilee to allow an Asian actress to take the role. It’s unfortunate that the show is now caught up in controversy instead of being celebrated for its positive steps.

The original X-Men animated series from the ’90s holds a special place in our hearts, and many were excited for its revival. However, this casting issue has dampened the enthusiasm. We hope Marvel Studios addresses these concerns seriously and respects the characters’ identities as they are in the comics.

X-Men ’97 is set to premiere on Disney Plus in late 2023. As we await its release, the debate over casting choices continues, reminding us of the importance of representation and staying true to the source material.
