Marvel Fires Back at Beau DeMayo Over Claims of Lost Credit for ‘X-Men ’97’ Season 2
Five months ago, Beau DeMayo, the creative force behind ‘X-Men ’97’, was let go by Marvel Studios under mysterious circumstances. Recently, he voiced concerns that he won’t be credited for the second season of the Disney+ series, despite completing his work before his departure. DeMayo shared his frustrations on social media, describing his experience as part of a ‘troubling pattern’ during his time at Marvel.
Marvel quickly responded with a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, clarifying that DeMayo’s dismissal followed an ‘egregious’ internal investigation. They stated, ‘Mr. DeMayo was terminated in March 2024 due to the findings of this investigation, leading to an immediate severance of ties, and he no longer has any affiliation with Marvel.’
DeMayo’s exit seems tied to broader issues than just his social media activity, despite his claim linking the removal of his season two credits to a specific post—a shirtless depiction of himself as Cyclops shared during Gay Pride in June. While his social media presence has been bold and consistent, sources suggest deeper reasons behind Marvel’s decision, mentioning allegations of sexual misconduct.
Despite the controversy, ‘X-Men ’97’ has been well-received, earning a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes and securing an Emmy nomination for DeMayo for the episode ‘Remember It.’ Marvel has already introduced plans for the third season, with Matthew Chauncey at the helm, following DeMayo’s firing.
In recent days, DeMayo hinted at ongoing struggles with Marvel, particularly regarding his inability to secure an Emmy seat through the studio. He stated he would be stepping back from social media to find a safer space to express himself: ‘I’ll have more to say soon but need to find a safer space to be out, proud, and nerdy. Stay tuned.’
His later comments reacted sharply to Marvel’s public statements, suggesting that the studio was using his tweets as a scapegoat for larger contractual issues. He promised, ‘The truth will be revealed. After their Disney Plus disaster, Marvel wants to mislead with alleged contract breaches over tweets. It’s tragic it’s come to this but unsurprising. Stay tuned.’
This clash highlights the complex dynamics of creative credit and public persona management in the entertainment industry, especially for creators like DeMayo who engage actively with their fanbase and openly discuss their identities.
