Marvel Studios Officially Drops Its Original Disney Plus Strategy
Marvel Studios is shaking up how it creates shows for Disney+. Since 2021, starting with WandaVision, theyโve had a pretty clear plan, but now theyโre making a big change with the upcoming Agatha All Along.
In the past, Marvel used a structure where one person, the head writer, took charge of the scripts. However, when it came time for production, the control would be handed over to the director and producers. This worked well for their films, so it seemed like a good idea to bring that approach to their Disney+ series.
But things havenโt been going as smoothly for some of the more recent shows. While WandaVision and Loki were praised, others didnโt hit the same mark. Some believe that part of the problem was a lack of consistent creative vision. With no single person overseeing the project from start to finish, things didnโt feel as cohesive as they could have been.
Now, Marvel is introducing a big change. Starting with Agatha All Along, the company will use showrunners for their live-action series. This means that one person will guide the entire process, from writing to filming to editing. Jac Schaeffer, the head writer for WandaVision, will take on this role for Agatha All Along.
This is a major shift for Marvel, and the goal is clear: create shows that feel more like real TV series and less like something thatโs trying to constantly connect to the bigger MCU picture. Weโre moving away from the idea that every show is a piece of the puzzle and toward something more character-driven. As Schaeffer put it, the shows can now โgo down a rabbit holeโ with characters, giving them more time to shine on their own.
This change is a big deal. Marvel knows that people love interconnected stories, but theyโre now leaning toward making each show stand on its own. Itโs less about doing โhomeworkโ to follow every twist and more about getting into deeper storytelling.
Itโs worth noting that Daredevil: Born Again was originally thought to be the first show to make this switch, but Agatha All Along will officially lead the charge.
With this new approach, Marvel hopes to capture the same excitement that WandaVision and Loki brought to Disney+. Theyโre aiming to keep us hooked by focusing on fresh, standalone stories that still fit into the larger MCU when it makes sense.
Weโll soon see if this new strategy pays off when Agatha All Along premieres on September 18.
