Marvel’s Mighty Secret: Half of Their Stars Might be Using Muscle Boosters, Expert Claims

Marvel actors often impress us with their superhero bodies in MCU movies, but a medical expert suggests that many might not be doing it the natural way. For these larger-than-life roles, actors are pushed to develop extreme physical strength and athleticism, often in remarkably short periods.

Dr. Todd Schroeder, a clinical physiotherapy expert quoted by Variety, believes that the quick and dramatic transformations we see might be aided by performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs). He estimated that ‘fifty to seventy-five percent’ of Marvel’s stars could be using some form of PED to achieve their physique.

Marvel’s actors have not publicly admitted to using such drugs, which have long been associated with quick muscle gain and strength enhancement. However, the view on PEDs has evolved. Now, with better research and understanding of their effects, their use under medical supervision has become more accepted. According to Dr. Schroeder, ‘It’s kind of expected’ for actors to use PEDs with a team of doctors, nutritionists, and trainers to avoid long-term health risks.

Dr. Schroeder also pointed out that short-term use of these substances isn’t typically harmful and that actors preparing for multi-million dollar roles might see it as a worthwhile risk. He argued that controlled usage can help actors avoid the negative stigma while achieving the necessary physique for their roles.

Interestingly, Dr. Schroeder mentioned Chris Hemsworth as an example of an actor who might not need such enhancement due to his strong genetic predisposition toward fitness. He suggested that Hemsworth, known for his role as Thor, has ‘always been in really good shape,’ and might be achieving his physique naturally.

The superhero movie industry has evolved since the first MCU films, with more realistic expectations for physical transformations as actors age. For instance, Hugh Jackman and Chris Hemsworth had far less muscular bodies in their initial Marvel appearances compared to their more recent films.

Marvel and DC have started to acknowledge the aging of actors and the unsustainable nature of continuous physical enhancement. This shift is reflected in their approach to character portrayal, focusing more on the iconic suits and less on the need for exaggerated physical bodies, which is particularly beneficial for female superheroes.

Actresses like Scarlett Johansson and Brie Larson have shown that intense training and dedication can achieve formidable physical presence without compromising their comfort or oversexualizing their characters.

In an industry where physical prowess is celebrated, the boundaries between natural enhancement and artificial aids seem to be blurring. Yet, the commitment to maintaining superhero physiques, whether through natural or enhanced methods, remains a complex and controversial aspect of modern cinema.
