Marvel’s Mystery: The Story Behind the Thunderbolts* Title

Marvel Studios has piqued the curiosity of its audience with the intriguing inclusion of an asterisk in the title of its upcoming movie, ‘Thunderbolts*.’ Kevin Feige, the President of Marvel Studios, confirmed last year that the asterisk is officially part of the title after some schedule adjustments, though he kept its meaning under wraps. This secrecy has only fueled widespread speculation among viewers.

The film ‘Thunderbolts*’ boasts a stellar lineup, including Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, aka the Winter Soldier, David Harbour as Alexei, also known as the Red Guardian, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. In the trailer, Yelena hints at the complex backgrounds of each member, setting the stage for a team that could potentially fill the void left by the Avengers after ‘Endgame.’

One interesting theory suggests that the Thunderbolts might be stepping into the shoes of the Avengers, even adopting their name. This speculation is supported by hints such as the potential purchase of the Avengers Tower by Valentina. If this is true, it could redefine the group’s identity within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Furthermore, there’s a possibility that ‘Thunderbolts*’ could be a placeholder for ‘Dark Avengers.’ This concept follows Marvel Comics’ ‘Dark Reign’ series where Norman Osborn, known as the Green Goblin, rebrands S.H.I.E.L.D. into H.A.M.M.E.R. and sets up villains as heroes to earn public trust. This scenario closely mirrors the manipulations by Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ character in the MCU, as she has been connecting with various characters under suspicious circumstances.

Alternatively, the team could represent the ‘Secret Avengers,’ a covert group formed during the ‘Heroic Age’ comics series. This group was a black ops team led by Steve Rogers that operated discreetly, similar to the rogue activities of Captain America and his allies in the MCU post-‘Civil War.’

David Harbour added to the intrigue in a recent interview with ComicBook, noting the retroactive addition of the asterisk and expressing his excitement for the audience to discover its significance, which he hinted was ‘very cool.’ However, he remained tight-lipped about further details.

The true meaning behind the asterisk in ‘Thunderbolts*’ is a major topic of conversation among Marvel enthusiasts and will likely remain so until the film’s release on May 2, 2025. Until then, we can only guess and enjoy the buildup to what promises to be an exciting addition to the MCU.
