Mephisto Almost Made the Cut in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’
The blockbuster ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ nearly featured Mephisto as the antagonist. Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, and director Shawn Levy revealed during their promotion of the film that Mephisto was a top choice for a villain early in development.
The trio shared with Collider that while finalizing the movie’s plot, they juggled several ideas for the villain’s role. It was during these discussions that the concept of Mephisto was strongly considered. This choice was eventually set aside for Cassandra Nova, adding a unique twist by linking her closely with Professor X. This connection introduces a captivating layer to the story, given Cassandraโs complex relationship with Professor X.
Hugh Jackman, reflecting on his continued portrayal of Wolverine, jokingly dismissed questions about his future in the role, suggesting that regardless of his past statements about retiring the character, the fun and excitement of this latest project could hint at more appearances.
The film aims to balance intense action with deep character development. Shawn Levy emphasized their goal to keep each battle fresh and engaging, avoiding the typical action fatigue that can accompany superhero movies. According to Levy, the creative process was highly collaborative, with the best ideas rising to the top, regardless of their source.
Ryan Reynolds added that the film is intended to be a standalone adventure that leaves audiences feeling thrilled and moved, rather than just a setup for future films.
As ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ hits theaters on July 26, fans can only imagine what could have been if Mephisto had been the foe. This behind-the-scenes peek at the film’s creative process shows just how dynamic and fluid crafting a blockbuster can be.
