Mobile Suit Gundam Live-Action Movie Finds a Director
According to Deadline, Legendary and Bandai Namco Filmworks are joining forces to bring a live-action Gundam movie to the big screen.
The project is in capable hands with Jim Mickle, celebrated for his work on Netflix’s Sweet Tooth, stepping in as both writer and director.
He’ll also produce alongside Linda Moran through their production outfit, Nightshade.
For fans like us, this is thrilling. Gundam has been compared to Japan’s version of Star Wars or the Marvel Universe, pioneering the mecha genre with its extensive lore across 83 animated series and movies.
Beyond its cultural impact, the franchise is a commercial titan, annually pulling in over $600 million from its toys and retail ventures.
While the film’s plot remains tightly under wraps, we know that the cameras are set to roll in early 2025.
This venture into live-action is a first for the Gundam series, a move Legendary has been planning for a while.
They previously considered a partnership with Netflix and director Jordan Vogt-Roberts, but that arrangement has since ended.
Jim Mickle’s track record speaks volumes. He burst onto the scene with Stake Land, snagging the Midnight Madness award at the Toronto International Film Festival.
His follow-up, We Are What We Are, debuted at Sundance and was featured at Cannes. His southern noir thriller, Cold In July, was also acclaimed at both festivals.
On television, his series Hap and Leonard, co-created for Sundance TV and AMC, has been well received.
Moreover, under Mickle’s leadership, Sweet Tooth not only earned a 97% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes but also secured four Emmy awards out of 20 nominations.
With his distinctive flair, Mickle is poised to offer a fresh take on Gundam. As production nears, the excitement among us is palpable — this film promises to be a conversation-starter among fans and newcomers alike.
Stay tuned for more updates as this ambitious project unfolds.
