Nintendo and Sony Select New Zealand for $200 Million ‘Legend of Zelda’ Production
On Wednesday, November 19, Sony Pictures and Nintendo officially announced that principal photography for the live-action ‘The Legend of Zelda’ film will commence in February 2026. The production has secured extensive filming locations across the South Island of New Zealand, utilizing the same dramatic landscapes that defined Peter Jacksonโs ‘The Lord of the Rings’ trilogy. The deal, finalized with the New Zealand Film Commission, reportedly includes a 25% tax rebate on production expenditure, incentivizing the studios to commit a budget exceeding $200 million to the high-fantasy adaptation.
Director Wes Ball, previously known for the ‘Maze Runner’ trilogy and 2024’s ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’, has been scouting locations near Queenstown and Milford Sound for the past three weeks. Sources close to the production indicate that Ball is prioritizing practical effects and on-location shooting to distinguish Hyrule from the CGI-heavy aesthetic of recent video game adaptations like ‘A Minecraft Movie’. The film will be co-financed by Nintendo, with the gaming giantโs Representative Director Shigeru Miyamoto heavily involved in the script development alongside screenwriter Derek Connolly.
The casting process for the lead roles of Link and Princess Zelda is entering its final stages, with chemistry tests scheduled at Sonyโs Culver City lot in early December. While the studio has remained tight-lipped regarding specific names, leaked casting calls describe the search for “actors aged 19-24 with extensive stunt and sword-fighting capabilities,” suggesting a more mature take on the franchise than some analysts initially predicted. Industry projections suggest the casting announcement will be made prior to the holiday break to maximize social media momentum heading into the new year.
This ambitious project arrives as Sony Pictures attempts to stabilize its slate following a volatile 2025 box office performance. With ‘Spider-Man 4’ now anchored for July 2026, a holiday 2027 or spring 2028 release for ‘Zelda’ would provide the studio with a critical long-term tentpole. “Nintendo is looking for ‘Avatar’-level world-building here,” noted media analyst Daniel Loria. “They aren’t just making a movie; they are building a cinematic asset to rival the Super Mario Bros. animation arm.”
Local officials in Wellington have welcomed the news, estimating the production could inject upwards of $150 million NZD into the local economy through employment and tourism. The production is expected to occupy Stone Street Studios for interior shots, booking the facilities for a solid nine-month block. As the pre-production team sets up base camp, the ‘Legend of Zelda’ movie is poised to become the largest production to hit the region since Amazonโs ‘The Rings of Power’ relocated to the UK.
