It’s official! Lionsgate, known for the ‘SAW’ series, is joining forces with Red Barrels, a leader in the horror game industry, to turn the popular ‘Outlast’ series into a movie. The announcement was made by Bloody Disgusting, who shared exclusive details about the upcoming film adaptation.

Roy Lee, a well-known figure in the horror movie scene, is set to produce the film. He’s behind successful films like ‘It’ and ‘Barbarian’, bringing his expertise to ensure the ‘Outlast’ movie remains true to the game’s spine-chilling essence. The game, beloved by over 37 million players, is renowned for its intense psychological horror.

J.T. Petty, who contributed to the game’s story, is on board to write the film’s screenplay. He shared his excitement about deepening the game’s lore through cinema, marking a thrilling expansion of the ‘Outlast’ universe.

The partnership between Lionsgate and Red Barrels is a promising one, combining years of cinematic horror expertise and innovative gaming horror. The film aims to encapsulate the game’s immersive atmosphere and relentless suspense, characteristics that have defined the game since its debut in 2012.

‘Outlast’ has seen several additions since its initial release, including ‘Outlast: Whistleblower’, ‘Outlast 2’, and the recent ‘The Outlast Trials’ from 2024, which offers a multiplayer experience. Each installment explores themes of manipulation and the dark side of power, making it a fitting candidate for a gripping horror film.
