Robert Downey Jr. Almost Made a Cameo in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’

‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ is raking in almost a billion dollars, so it’s no surprise the movie is a hot topic. We’re diving into some insider secrets about the film, revealed by the movie’s co-writers, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick for IndieWire. They’ve been with the ‘Deadpool’ series from the start, and they’ve got plenty to share about what could have been.

Reese and Wernick had big plans for Robert Downey Jr. They wrote a scene expecting him to appear alongside Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan. However, Downey was also gearing up to play Doctor Doom, so doubling up wasn’t possible. In the end, the scene had to go on without him. It featured Happy rejecting Deadpool’s team player abilities, which was similar to the final version, just with one less star.

The writers shared a scrapped idea that would have brought all the Avengers into a room with Deadpool, who would have his unique way with them. Imagine Deadpool trying to make Captain America swear or attempting to lift Thor’s Hammer—scenes we missed that would have been epic. Reese noted that coordinating such a scene would be a logistical nightmare, comparing it to organizing star-studded charity events.

On the casting front, everyone they wanted said yes, except for a few big names like Gwen Stefani and Robert Downey Jr. Reese joked that even the Pope might say no to Deadpool. They did manage to bring back some favorites, though, like Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, and even got Chris Evans to reprise his role as Johnny Storm.

The writers also touched on some behind-the-scenes drama. Remember the leak of the ‘Deadpool’ test footage in 2014? That leak was crucial for getting the film series off the ground. It turns out it was a strategic move by two people who weren’t officially part of the team but wanted to see the project succeed. They weren’t from Fox, and their identities remain a mystery, with the writers only hinting they were two brothers.

Wernick and Reese shared these insights with a mix of relief and nostalgia, knowing that many ideas didn’t make the final cut but were thrilled with what did. As for future movies, they teased potential scenes and cameos, hoping to build on what has already been established. They even joked about bringing Thor and Deadpool together in a future film, which would surely be a hit with us fans.

‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ is now in theaters, full of surprises and what-ifs that keep us talking and guessing what could come next in this ever-expanding universe.
