Robert Kirkman Shares Insights on the Much-Anticipated ‘Invincible’ Live-Action Film

Robert Kirkman, the creator of ‘Invincible’, recently provided an exciting update on the live-action film version of his popular comic series at San Diego Comic-Con. Despite the success of the animated series on Amazon Studios, fans are still eager for the live-action film, which was first announced by The Hollywood Reporter back in 2017. Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg were initially slated to write and direct the film.

Kirkman explained that the movie is still in the works and emphasized the importance of getting it just right. He mentioned, ‘It’s still in development. We’re still working with Universal. The show is going really well, and I think the movie absolutely has to be perfect. Itโ€™s taking a lot of time, like getting the pieces aligned and everything to work so that we can come out and make it as good as it can possibly be.’

The challenge, according to Kirkman, is to provide a unique experience compared to the animated series while remaining true to the essence of ‘Invincible’. ‘It has to provide a different experience, it has to still be true to ‘Invincible’ in some interesting ways. But it has to be its own thing. It has to stand on its own,’ he added.

The process of adapting the story from comics to an animated series and now to a film is complex. Kirkman shared, ‘Itโ€™s difficult. The comic is one thing, the animated series is another thing, and now this movie has to be this third thing. It has to provide a new experience but maybe tell the same story, maybe tell a different story.’

He humorously remarked that the development might even extend long enough for Timothรฉe Chalamet to play Omni-Man, highlighting the lengthy and challenging process of bringing such a multifaceted story to the big screen.

Furthermore, Kirkman discussed the different creative approaches between the animated series and the potential film. ‘The movie process is definitely condensing. And that can be frustrating at times, but it’s also a fun challenge. But the animated series, especially for us, I think of it as an expanding process. There’s a lot of different scenes if you compare them to the comic, we do more. We put more emotion in them. There’s more dialogue going on. There’s a little bit more character development happening.’

As for what the fans can expect from an ‘Invincible’ movie, it’s unclear how the story will be adapted. With the animated show already deep into its second season and more to come, it’s hard to imagine compressing its expansive narrative into a traditional movie runtime. The film might need to explore an original story or a sequel that takes place after the events of both the show and the comics. Regardless, the demand for more from the ‘Invincible’ universe is strong, and the movie promises to be an exciting addition.

Prime Video is currently streaming the animated ‘Invincible’ series, allowing fans to dive into the world of Mark Grayson and his superpowered challenges while they await the live-action adaptation.
