Shawn Levy Explains What ‘Marvel Jesus’ Really Means in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’

Shawn Levy, the director of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’, recently shed some light on a particular line in the film that got us all talking. In an interview with ComicBook, he explained the origins of Deadpool’s self-comparison to ‘Marvel Jesus’. This term has caught the attention of many, but according to Levy, it was just a happy coincidence that it meshed so well with the ongoing conversations about superhero movies getting a bit repetitive.

Levy pointed out that the joke was part of the script well before films like ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ and ‘The Marvels’ were released. It wasn’t intended to poke fun at the Marvel Cinematic Universe or its recent struggles.

Instead, it was all about capturing Deadpool’s over-the-top self-confidence. He mentioned that the idea came from seeing Deadpool, or Wade, get a chance to really show what he’s made of and his almost delusional belief in his own greatness which fits his character perfectly.

The director emphasized that the timing of the joke aligning with broader discussions about the state of superhero films was purely coincidental. He wanted to highlight how Deadpool’s boastful nature and how he sees himself was meant to be humorous, reflecting his unique character arc in the movie.

And it seems like this approach has paid off. ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ has been a hit at the box office. In its first weekend alone, the movie set a new record with a whopping $444.1 million worldwide, including $211 million from U.S. audiences. This makes it the biggest global debut ever for an R-rated film.

Currently, you can catch ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ in theaters, where it continues to draw crowds eager to see these beloved characters team up. So, next time you hear Deadpool calling himself ‘Marvel Jesus’, just remember, it’s all part of his charm.
