Simu Liu Stirs Controversy with Comments on Chadwick Boseman

Marvel star Simu Liu sparked controversy with his remarks at the premiere of ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,’ which took place nearly two years ago. Dressed in an all-black suit and spectacles, Liu shared his thoughts on the film’s new direction without Chadwick Boseman and highlighted the importance of cultural allyship.

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Liu said, ‘Being here reminds me more of the importance of allyship and celebrating not just our own cultures but also each other’s struggles and victories. I’m grateful to be part of this.’ His follow-up comment, however, did not sit well with fans: ‘I very much follow in Chadwick’s footsteps, so I’m grateful for the comparison, and I’m hoping I can live up to it.’

This statement led to immediate backlash on Twitter, with fans accusing Liu of overshadowing Boseman, who passed away in August 2020 from colon cancer. Many felt Liu was positioning himself on a par with Boseman unnecessarily.

Liu, who gained fame as Marvel’s first Asian superhero in ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,’ has faced controversies in the past, including backlash for alleged comments on a deleted Reddit post. In these supposed comments, he likened being gay to having a mutation, though these remarks were never verified. Liu later addressed and dismissed his critics on Twitter.

Some attempted to see Liu’s side, suggesting that Black Panther, Marvel’s first Black superhero, helped pave the way for characters like Liu’s. Yet, even as Liu praised Boseman’s legacy in a separate interview, he mentioned Boseman’s passing affected him ‘personally,’ which some interpreted as making the moment about himself.

With ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ having been released in November 2022, the discussions around Liu’s comments continue to underscore the delicate issues of legacy and representation in Hollywood. Despite his rising stardom, Liu’s history of verbal missteps suggests a need for more careful public communication or deeper reflection before speaking.
