Sony Puts ‘Beyond the Spider-Verse’ on Hold for Now
Sony has decided to halt the development of their animated movie ‘Beyond the Spider-Verse’, initially set for a March 2024 release, now postponed to potentially 2027. The studio cited ‘creative reasons’ for this decision. Sources close to the matter, like Jeff Sneider, suggest that the film’s team is actually quite relieved. This delay allows them more time to perfect the highly detailed animation required for the sequel.
This move comes after the massive success of ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ in the summer of 2023, which won both critical acclaim and box office glory. However, the sequel to this hit seems to be in trouble. This isn’t the only struggle Sony has faced recently. Their other comic book projects like ‘Morbius’ and ‘Madame Web’ have been disappointing at the box office.
The creative duo Phil Lord and Chris Miller, known for their previous work on successful Spider-Man projects, recently ended their association with Sony. They had a falling out with the studio, partly over the direction of projects like ‘Spider-Noir’. Sony chose not to renew their lucrative contract which began in 2019. This partnership had initially planned for them to oversee multiple Spider-Man related projects.
It’s interesting to note that Lord and Miller have moved on to direct ‘Project Hail Mary’, a sci-fi film starring Ryan Gosling. This marks their return to directing since their 2014 movie ’22 Jump Street’, after their departure from the ‘Solo’ project.
The atmosphere behind the scenes of ‘Across the Spider-Verse’ might shed some light on potential issues with ‘Beyond the Spider-Verse’. According to Vulture last year, the production environment under Lord and Miller was extremely demanding. The crew described it as being full of endless revisions and a very challenging work environment. These factors could very well have influenced the current situation with the sequel.
As we wait to see what comes next for the ‘Spider-Verse’ series, it’s clear that Sony is navigating through some turbulent creative waters. Hopefully, this extra time will lead to another standout addition to the Spider-Man universe.
