‘Spider-Man 4’ Set for a Multiverse Twist and Possible Delays
In February 2015, Marvel Studios and Sony teamed up in a groundbreaking deal, allowing an upcoming Spider-Man film series to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This collaboration has seen Tom Holland as Spider-Man appear in six different MCU projects, becoming a fan favorite.
In 2021, Marvel’s Kevin Feige confirmed the start of development on ‘Spider-Man 4’ with Sony, right after the release of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’. However, three years later, there hasn’t been an official release date announced for the new movie. Kevin Feige mentioned back in December 2021 that he, along with Amy Pascal and teams from Disney and Sony, were planning the next part of Spider-Man’s journey. Feige shared this to keep us hopeful and avoid the separation anxiety experienced after ‘Far From Home’.
Fast forward to 2022, Tom Holland was secured to continue his role as Spider-Man. By early 2023, Feige revealed that they had broken the story for ‘Spider-Man 4’ and script development was underway. He said, ‘All I will say is that we have the story. We have big ideas for that, and our writers are just putting pen to paper now.’ Although 2023 saw some halts in production, the plot was rumored to involve a ‘street-level civil war’, featuring Spider-Man and Daredevil against Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin.
This storyline is believed to spin out of the events of the Daredevil: Born Again series. The film’s production was anticipated to start in late 2024 with a possible 2025 release, but recent updates suggest a delay to 2026.
Daniel RPK, a trusted MCU insider, recently hinted that ‘Spider-Man 4’ is pivoting towards a multiverse-themed plot. This has received mixed reactions, as fans are somewhat weary of another multiverse storyline following ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’. Despite the skepticism, a multiverse angle could lead to exciting developments like the introduction of Miles Morales into the MCU, potentially joining Peter Parker.
The prospect of a Peter and Miles team-up carries a lot of potential for success, especially considering the significant role Miles played in the 2015 Marvel Comics event ‘Secret Wars’. Introducing Miles before the ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ film in 2027 could set him up for an important part in the MCU’s future.
As we wait for more official updates from Sony, the shift towards a multiverse storyline could enrich the Spider-Man narrative, bringing fresh dynamics and characters into the fold. It’s clear that Spider-Man’s adventures in the MCU are far from over, and we can’t wait to see what twists and turns ‘Spider-Man 4’ will bring.
