Spider-Man Prepares for His Toughest Battle Yet in Amazing Spider-Man

Marvel has hinted that Spider-Man will endure his toughest challenge ever in the upcoming Amazing Spider-Man #59. The issue, which is part of Zeb Wells’ concluding chapters in his tenure, features a showdown with Lonnie Lincoln, also known as Tombstone, the new crime boss of New York.

This showdown has been building up throughout Wells’ 58-issue run which began in 2022. The story kicked off in Amazing Spider-Man #1, where Tombstone and other crime lords like Hammerhead, Mister Negative, and The Rose took advantage of a power vacuum left by Daredevil’s defeat of Wilson Fisk. This set the stage for a brutal turf war, with Spider-Man caught in the middle, trying to manipulate the situation to maintain peace in New York.

The conflict escalated when Peter Parker’s friend, Randy Robertson, almost married Tombstone’s daughter, Janice Lincoln. A failed assassination attempt on Tombstone during the wedding plunged the city into chaos, leading to a massive gang war that involved numerous other Marvel heroes like Luke Cage and Daredevil.

In the most recent issues, after Tombstone tried to consolidate power and was betrayed by his daughter, Spider-Man managed to arrest him. However, Tombstone’s trial took a turn when Janice decided to testify against him.

With Amazing Spider-Man #59 set for release in October, fans are promised a brutal fight, described as the most severe Spider-Man has ever faced. The anticipation builds as John Romita Jr. captures this epic battle, which promises to be a significant highlight of Wells’ run.

Following this climactic issue, Wells will conclude his storyline with an oversized Amazing Spider-Man #60. This finale will wrap up his narrative threads before passing the torch to Joe Kelly, who will start the ‘8 Deaths of Spider-Man’ saga. This next chapter will introduce a new magic-powered suit for Spider-Man, designed by Ed McGuinness.
