Spider-Verse Creators Phil Lord and Chris Miller Likely Out at Sony TV

Reports are surfacing that Sony Pictures Television may not renew their contract with Phil Lord and Chris Miller. The duo, known for their work on ‘The LEGO Movie’ and ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’, were expected to develop a Spider-Man TV universe.

However, Sony’s hopes haven’t been fully realized, with only ‘Spider-Noir’ making it to production from the expected lineup. It seems there have been some disagreements over budget, and other series like ‘Silk: Spider Society’ haven’t moved past the development stage despite two years of work.

Sony’s track record with Spider-Man spinoffs is mixed. While ‘Venom’ movies have seen success, other projects like ‘Morbius’ and ‘Madame Web’ haven’t quite hit the mark. This uneven success adds more strain to the Spider-Verse expansion plans.

According to a breakdown by Puck during the “peak TV” era, Sony’s big bet on Spider-Man content hasn’t paid off as they hoped. Despite this, Phil Lord and Chris Miller continue to find success elsewhere, notably with the Apple TV+ series ‘The Afterparty’.

In an exciting development, Nicolas Cage is set to bring Spider-Man Noir to life in the new live-action series ‘Spider-Noir’. The series, which will air on Prime Video and MGM+, features Cage as a private investigator in 1930s New York, dealing with the echoes of his superhero past. Cage expressed his enthusiasm about the role, mentioning his inspiration from classic film icons like Robinson, Cagney, and Bogart, and blending it with the pop art style of Lichtenstein.

Vernon Sanders from Amazon MGM Studios highlighted the unique opportunity to expand the Marvel universe with ‘Spider-Noir’. He praised the decision to cast the incredibly talented Nicolas Cage and acknowledged the experienced production team, which includes Amy Pascal and Sony’s team, dedicated to authentically growing this franchise.

The evolving situation at Sony raises questions about the future of their Spider-Man TV projects. As we look forward to ‘Spider-Noir’, it’s clear that the path forward is paved with both opportunity and challenge.
