Stan Lee Was Mistaken in Predicting a Movie About MCU TV’s Premier Superhero

Stan Lee, a legendary figure in the comic book industry known for his cameos in nearly all Marvel films, believed that a movie focusing on Daredevil would be very successful. Despite his significant contributions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, not all his predictions came to fruition.

Back on February 14, 2003, Ben Affleck was introduced as Matt Murdock in the movie ‘Daredevil,’ directed by Mark Steven Johnson and co-starring Jennifer Garner as Elektra. Despite the best efforts of its creators, the movie did not meet expectations and was largely seen as a failure. Years later, in a 2015 Business Insider interview, Lee expressed his desire to see Daredevil revived in another movie, believing it would be well-received the second time around.

Despite Lee’s hopes, a sequel to Affleck’s Daredevil was shelved, and the character eventually found a new life on Netflix in 2015. The series format allowed for a more in-depth exploration of Daredevil’s complex character, something a two-hour film could never fully encompass. This approach proved to be a hit, earning global acclaim and lasting for three successful seasons.

The series format’s success led to the character being revisited once more in the upcoming ‘Daredevil: Born Again,’ slated for release in March 2025 on Disney+ in the U.S. This decision to continue as a series rather than a movie underscores the advantages of episodic storytelling for developing deep and engaging character arcs.

The intricate nature of Matt Murdock, also known as Daredevil, is difficult to compress into a single film. A series provides the necessary scope to delve into his journey and complexities thoroughly. This is why viewers have shown a preference for spending more time with the series, which allows for a richer and more engaging experience, as opposed to a rushed movie.

With Charlie Cox returning to play the titular role, ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ is generating considerable excitement among fans. The decision to continue Daredevil’s story in a series format reaffirms the belief that some characters can be more effectively and satisfyingly developed over multiple episodes rather than condensed into a short film format.

Stan Lee’s initial prediction might not have panned out as he expected, but Daredevil has indeed found a format that suits it best, proving that sometimes, a slower, more deliberate approach can lead to greater success.
