‘Star Wars’ Creator Slams Critics Who Complain Saga Isn’t Diverse Enough
George Lucas, the mind behind ‘Star Wars,’ recently responded to ongoing critiques about the lack of diversity in his films. Speaking at the Cannes Film Festival, Lucas was upfront about the inclusive nature of his universe, filled with an array of alien beings. He emphasized that these characters, ranging from green creatures to large, furry ones, are part of his vision where everyone is accepted regardless of their appearance.
During his conversation, Lucas pointed out that discrimination isn’t just a human issue; it extends to robots in his stories, suggesting a reflection on how we currently view Artificial Intelligence with suspicion. He linked these themes directly to the challenges and fears surrounding AI today.
Lucas also highlighted key characters from his films to illustrate diversity. He mentioned Lando Calrissian, portrayed by Billy Dee Williams, and Jedi knight Mace Windu, played by Samuel L. Jackson, as significant Black characters in the saga. Female roles were not overlooked either. Princess Leia, led by Carrie Fisher, stands out as a revolutionary leader, and Natalie Portman’s portrayal of Senator Padme Amidala in the prequels adds to the strong female presence.
The filmmaker has taken his commitment to diversity beyond the screen as well. He has been actively supporting underrepresented groups through a diversity program at the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts, to which he donated $10 million in 2017.
Lucas firmly believes that his ‘Star Wars’ universe is a statement on acceptance and equality, challenging the viewer to see beyond the surface. As we enjoy the tales of galaxies far, far away, he reminds us that the core message is one of embracing differences and finding strength in diversity.
