Production on the highly anticipated third season of ‘Jujutsu Kaisen’ has come to an abrupt halt following a coordinated walkout by animation staff at Studio MAPPAโ€™s Suginami City headquarters. Approximately 150 key animators and contract freelancers vacated the premises on Saturday morning, November 22, effectively freezing work on the upcoming “Culling Game” arc. The labor dispute centers on stagnating wages and deteriorating working conditions, marking one of the most significant industrial actions in the modern anime industry.

Negotiations between the studioโ€™s production committee and the newly formed animator coalition broke down late Friday night regarding per-cut payment rates. According to internal documents reviewed during the investigation, freelancers were offered a flat rate of 2,800 JPY ($18.15 USD) per cut for the complex action sequences required for Season 3. The coalition is demanding a baseline of 4,500 JPY ($29.15 USD) to match the rising cost of living in Tokyo and the technical demands of the high-profile series.

The immediate impact of the walkout has forced an indefinite delay on the project, which was internally targeted for a Spring 2026 broadcast window. A senior production manager at MAPPA, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the studio is currently unable to complete the remaining 60% of the season’s storyboards without the core creative team. The delay is expected to cost the studio upwards of 450 million JPY ($2.9 million USD) in contract penalties with broadcasters and streaming partners if production does not resume within the next 30 days.

Industry experts warn that this localized strike could trigger a wider reckoning for anime production houses across Japan. “The ‘Jujutsu Kaisen’ team is composed of some of the most talented freelance action directors in the business,” said Hiroshi Tanaka, a representative for the Japan Animation Creators Association (JAniCA). “If MAPPA cannot meet their terms, it sets a precedent that the era of producing blockbuster hits on budget-tier wages is effectively over.”

Studio MAPPA released a brief statement early Monday morning acknowledging “scheduling adjustments” for ‘Jujutsu Kaisen’ but declined to comment on the specific demands regarding animator compensation. As of Monday afternoon, picket lines remain active outside the Suginami studio, with supporters from other major productions joining the demonstration in solidarity. The standoff leaves the future of one of the decade’s biggest anime franchises in a precarious limbo.
