Despite Backlash and Hate, ‘The Acolyte’ Comes Out as the 2nd Most Successful Star Wars Series
Despite facing considerable criticism, The Acolyte has proven to be a standout success among the Star Wars series on Disney+. Positioned just behind Obi-Wan Kenobi, it has surpassed viewer engagement with shows like Ahsoka, The Mandalorian Seasons 1 to 3, The Book of Boba Fett, and Andor. This data comes from Reelgood, a third-party analytics firm that tracks streaming trends across various US platforms.
The series, led by Leslye Headland, the first woman to create a Star Wars series and openly queer, has been targeted for its diverse casting and alleged deviations from the Star Wars canon. Critics have particularly focused on the portrayal of Jedi Master Ki-Adi-Mundi and the show’s progressive themes, dubbing it ‘The Wokelyte’ and attacking it for its inclusion of a gay protagonist played by Amandla Stenberg.
Reelgood’s insights show that despite a rocky start with lower initial viewership compared to Ahsoka, The Acolyte has managed to captivate audiences, achieving six times the engagement of the average top 100 TV shows. In contrast, Obi-Wan Kenobi leads with an engagement factor of eight.

Controversy escalated when Wookieepedia updated Ki-Adi-Mundi’s profile after his appearance in the show, resulting in threats towards its editors. The backlash is not solely based on the show’s content; much of it stems from its representation and the change in narrative style, with some legitimate critiques about its pacing and dialogue.
Despite these challenges, The Acolyte has maintained strong performance metrics, as noted by ScreenRant, and continues to draw in viewers with its fresh perspective on the Star Wars universe. The first five episodes are available now, with new episodes releasing every Tuesday on Disney+, allowing us to see how the series will conclude its current season.
