‘The Acolyte’ Shakes Up Star Wars Universe with Bold LGBTQ+ Themes
The new ‘Star Wars’ series, ‘The Acolyte,’ has quickly become a hot topic for its distinct approach, described by creator Leslye Headland as ‘arguably the gayest Star Wars’ yet. This series, streaming on Disney+ since June 4, has sparked considerable debate, particularly around its LGBTQ+ content, which includes a playful comment about the iconic robot R2-D2 being lesbian.
During a candid discussion captured by The Wrap, Leslye Headland and star Amandla Stenberg addressed the interviewer’s comments on the show’s LGBTQ+ themes. They humorously debated whether this aspect would become a focal point of discussion among fans. Stenberg responded to the query by highlighting the already vibrant presence of gay culture in the fanbase and Star Wars aesthetics.
However, this light-hearted exchange has ignited fierce backlash from certain conservative commentators. Figures like Ben Shapiro and Brett Cooper from The Daily Wire expressed their displeasure, accusing the series of prioritizing diversity quotas over quality storytelling. Isabel Brown shared similar sentiments on TikTok, influencing some viewers to boycott the show.
Despite the controversy, ‘The Acolyte’ has been well received by many critics and boasts a strong 80% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics from Bloomberg and Washington Post have praised the series for its fresh take and engaging storytelling. It even achieved the highest debut ratings for a Disney+ series this year, with 4.8 million views on its first day.
This isn’t Disney’s first run-in with accusations of ‘wokeness.’ Past projects like ‘The Little Mermaid’ and ‘The Marvels’ have also faced criticism for their inclusive casting and themes. Yet, Disney remains focused on crafting entertaining stories, as reiterated by CEO Bob Iger, who argues that many critics misunderstand the intent behind these creative decisions.
‘The Acolyte’ continues to unfold on Disney+, promising to explore deeper into its bold new narrative territory, resonating with a diverse audience and perhaps, redefining what it means to be a Star Wars series in today’s socially conscious climate.
