‘The Acolyte’ Shocks with First Onscreen Creation of a Sith Lightsaber
After nearly five decades, the season 1 finale of ‘The Acolyte’ has given us a groundbreaking momentโwitnessing the creation of a Sith lightsaber in live action. In the last episode of the season, we explore more of Mae and Osha’s journey, culminating in some major reveals, especially regarding the Sith’s connection to the show’s larger narrative. This episode also shows Osha embracing her darker emotions, which leads her to the Sith way.
The climax of season 1 brings all the central characters back to Brendok, Mae and Osha’s home planet, where they face their pasts in different ways. Among the highlights is an intense lightsaber battle between Master Sol and Manny Jacinto’s character, Sith Lord Qimir. Meanwhile, Osha learns the truth about her mother’s death. The finale fulfills many story promises and leaves hints about what could come in a potential second season.
A standout moment occurs when Osha, played by Amandla Stenberg, uses Sol’s lightsaber, and we see its kyber crystal turn from blue to blood-redโa first for live-action Star Wars. This shift happens as she kills Master Sol, fully immersing herself in her negative emotions and causing the crystal to ‘bleed’. This is significant because it’s the first time we see a lightsaber change colors right in the moment.
The concept of a ‘bleeding’ kyber crystal is well-known in the Star Wars universe. Sith cannot find red kyber crystals naturally; they must make them through a process that involves channeling immense pain and hate into the crystal. This brutal process alters the crystal to a permanent red, a method previously seen in Darth Vader’s story in Charles Souleโs comics and in other canon sources like ‘The Rise of Kylo Ren’.
It’s unclear whether Osha will craft a new lightsaber hilt for her red kyber crystal or continue using Master Sol’s. This unexpected turn of events sets the stage for Osha’s likely future as a Sith apprentice. With so many unanswered questions, fans, including me, are eager to see where Oshaโs newfound allegiance will take her in the unfolding story of ‘The Acolyte’.
