‘The Boys’ Season 4 Introduces Sister Sage, Inspired by Lex Luthor and Ozymandias
‘The Boys’ Season 4 has just premiered on Prime Video and it started with a bang, introducing us to Susan Heyward’s character, Sister Sage. Known as the world’s smartest person, she now poses a significant threat to Antony Starrโs Homelander, almost as a mirror to Lex Luthor’s brilliance in the Superman lore. Sister Sage is a major new addition to the narrative, impacting the dynamics of the story significantly.
Showrunner Eric Kripke shared insights with IGN on how difficult it was to write for a character whose intellect surpasses everyone else’s. He explained that creating Sister Sage’s character was a unique challenge because the writers had to think several steps ahead, much like the character does. Kripke mentioned that Sister Sage’s intelligence not only makes her a formidable figure but also adds a layer of complexity to the story, as it’s tough to consistently write a character smarter than yourself.
Casting Susan Heyward for the role wasn’t easy. Kripke needed someone who naturally exudes intelligence and can also portray vulnerability. Heyward fit this bill perfectly, bringing both intellectual presence and emotional depth to the role. Her performance, particularly in a heartfelt speech in Episode 6, highlights her ability to balance cold calculations with genuine emotion.
In the universe of ‘The Boys,’ Sister Sage and Homelander share a common goal for now. Unlike the traditional hero-villain dichotomy, they find themselves allied, adding a twist to the expected narrative. Kripke also drew inspiration for Sister Sage from Ozymandias of ‘Watchmen,’ another genius character from comic book history.
As we dive deeper into Season 4, it’s clear that Homelander is in a turbulent phase, despite seeming to have everything he wants. His interactions with Sister Sage reveal that no achievement fills the void he feels inside, which makes him a more dangerous and unpredictable character. Kripke aims to explore these darker aspects of Homelander, hoping to help us understand, if not sympathize with, his actions.
With the introduction of Sister Sage, ‘The Boys’ continues to blur the lines between heroes and villains, making us rethink who really deserves our cheers and who doesn’t. As the season progresses, it remains to be seen how long the alliance between Sister Sage and Homelander will last. Stay tuned to Prime Video to find out what happens next in this twisted superhero saga.
