The Penguin’ Rotten Tomatoes Score Revealed… And It’s Way Above ‘Agatha All Along’!

The latest buzz in the superhero world comes from ‘The Penguin‘, HBO’s new crime drama starring Colin Farrell as Oz Cobb. It debuted with an impressive 93% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes (it’s currently 88%), it’s currently outperforming last year’s ‘The Batman’, which scored 85%. That’s quite a feat, considering ‘The Batman’ was reviewed by a significantly larger pool of critics.

In ‘The Penguin’, Cristin Milioti shines as Sofia Falcone, aka The Hangman. Fay Watson, our deputy entertainment editor, praised her role as one of the ‘best performances in Batman’s on-screen history’. She noted, ‘Her charm as an actor will be unsurprising, but it’s the sheer brutality that she brings to her role that really takes everything up a notch.’ Other outlets have echoed this sentiment, hailing the show as a ‘near-perfect mobster story’ and a ‘spiritual sequel to The Sopranos’.

Meanwhile, don’t hold your breath for a cameo from Robert Pattinson’s Batman. ‘The Batman’ director Matt Reeves confirmed, ‘Rob is not going to be in the show. We did talk about all that but we felt the best way to do this was to go on a grand exploration of a guy grabbing for power in this moment.’ ‘The Penguin’, also featuring Rhenzy Feliz and Mark Strong, kicks off on HBO on September 19, promising thrilling new episodes every Sunday.

On the flip side, Marvel Studios is facing some challenges. Their latest release, ‘Agatha All Along‘, a spin-off from the 2021 series ‘WandaVision’, has garnered a lukewarm reception with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 79%, up from an initial 69%. This is still below ‘The Penguin’ and far lower than the debut score of ‘WandaVision’ at 92%. Despite some positive reviews, the series hasn’t managed to captivate all critics.

The ongoing struggle with declining box office returns and a saturated storyline may prompt Marvel to reconsider their approach. With the series budget undisclosed but likely high, the pressure is mounting. Disney CEO Bob Iger and Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige have scaled back on TV production, aiming to focus on quality over quantity. Whether this strategy will revive fan interest and critical acclaim remains to be seen.

In the meantime, ‘Agatha All Along’ continues streaming on Disney+, as fans and critics alike keep an eye on Marvel’s next moves. Will they manage to recapture their magic? Only time will tell.
