Thunderbolts’ New Villain Threatens to Outshine the MCU’s Biggest Heros
The upcoming Thunderbolts movie promises a thrilling team-up of antiheroes and former villains. Led by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, this group will include characters like Ghost, Taskmaster, Bucky Barnes, Yelena Belova, and the Red Guardian. Their mission, however, may be overshadowed by the introduction of a new god-tier threat.
There’s a lot of buzz about Sentry, Marvel’s answer to Superman, who could pose a significant challenge even to the Hulk. Sentry’s power level is something we haven’t seen in the MCU before. This raises questions about the relevance of our most powerful heroes, especially considering the mixed reception of the Secret Invasion series.
Secret Invasion introduced G’iah, a Super-Skrull with abilities from multiple MCU characters like Captain Marvel, Hulk, Thanos, Ghost, and more. Despite her incredible powers, the series didn’t make a huge impact, leaving G’iah’s future in the MCU uncertain. Many of us were hoping she would be a major player, but it seems she might be sidelined for now.
The MCU’s challenge now is balancing its lineup of characters. Heroes like Hawkeye and Black Widow have always seemed outmatched next to Thor or Doctor Strange. As more overpowered characters join, it’s becoming harder to see where the less powerful ones fit. Sentry’s introduction only adds to this power-scaling problem.
A key aspect of Sentry’s story is his battle with the Void, a dark and destructive entity that bonded to Robert Reynolds when he became the Sentry. The Void is more of a force than a person and can take any shape it chooses. It embodies Sentry’s negative aspects and is capable of destroying the Earth, if not the entire universe. Robert fights a constant inner battle to keep the Void at bay, as it emerges every time he uses his powers. This eternal nemesis is born from his own psyche.
We might enjoy seeing the Thunderbolts as underdogs fighting against overwhelming odds, but it’s clear that the MCU needs to find a better way to handle its wide range of character abilities. There’s hope that G’iah might return in future films like Avengers 5 or Secret Wars, but her low recognition from Secret Invasion makes this uncertain.
Thunderbolts will be an exciting addition to the MCU’s fifth phase, but it also highlights the growing challenge of balancing powerful and less powerful heroes. Let’s hope the movie brings a compelling story that justifies all these power dynamics.
