Timothée Chalamet demonstrated unwavering commitment to authenticity during a challenging scene in ‘Marty Supreme’. The actor rejected the use of a butt double for a spanking sequence. He insisted on performing the humiliating moment himself with a real ping-pong paddle.

Kevin O’Leary, making his acting debut in the film, delivered the spanks as character Milton Rockwell. O’Leary recounted that a stunt double was available for Chalamet. The star declined, stating he would handle it personally.

O’Leary shared, ‘There was a stunt ass. There was a double. [Chalamet] wouldn’t do it. He said he’ll do it himself. He didn’t want some other ass immortalized.’ A fake paddle initially planned to soften impacts broke on the first take. The production switched to a genuine paddle for the remaining shots.

The scene required approximately 40 takes, continuing until 4 a.m. Director Josh Safdie instructed O’Leary to increase intensity with each attempt. Safdie directed phrases like ‘wind up harder’ and ‘really whack him’ to capture the desired effect.

In ‘Marty Supreme’, Chalamet portrays Marty Mauser, an ambitious ping-pong hustler. O’Leary plays Milton Rockwell, a pen entrepreneur married to retired actress Kay Stone, portrayed by Gwyneth Paltrow. Marty becomes involved with the couple, leading to the pivotal humiliation as payment for championship assistance in Tokyo.

O’Leary described the moment as a key scene of degradation for Marty’s character. He explained that Marty had provoked Rockwell through repeated insults. O’Leary noted the punishment felt justified within the story context.

He added, ‘I never felt satisfied that he suffered enough for what he did. Even now, I’m still pissed.’ The sequence underscores themes of sacrifice and embarrassment in Marty’s pursuit of success.

‘Marty Supreme’ is an A24 sports dramedy directed by Josh Safdie. The film centers on table tennis competition and personal entanglements. Chalamet’s performance has generated significant awards attention.

The production achieved A24’s second-largest opening weekend with 17.4 million dollars in box office earnings. Critics have praised Chalamet’s portrayal of the cocky athlete. Industry observers position him as a strong contender in the best actor category.

Chalamet’s decision reflects method acting principles applied to physical discomfort. The choice ensured visual consistency without substitutes. Multiple extended takes amplified the scene’s raw intensity.

O’Leary highlighted Chalamet’s professionalism throughout the demanding night shoot. The collaboration produced a memorable moment of character vulnerability. ‘Marty Supreme’ explores ambition through unconventional athletic and interpersonal dynamics.
