Tom Bombadil Takes a New Turn in ‘The Rings of Power’ Season 2
Fans of J.R.R. Tolkien’s ‘The Lord of the Rings’ will be excited to hear that Tom Bombadil will appear for the first time in a live-action format in the upcoming second season of Amazon’s ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.’ Rory Kinnear, known for his roles in ‘Penny Dreadful,’ will be portraying this beloved character. Unlike his depiction in Tolkienโs works, the series will introduce Tom in a unique way.
In Tolkien’s story, Tom Bombadil is a mysterious and powerful character who comes into play when Frodo and his friends pass through the Old Forest. Known as the ‘Merry Fellow,’ Tom is notable for his immunity to the corrupting powers of the One Ring. His origins and nature are vague in the books, as Tolkien only hints that Tom existed before the Dark Lordโs arrival in Arda, perhaps even before the Valar came.

Rory Kinnear shared with Games Radar that the showrunners, J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, have crafted a different narrative path for Tom, one that doesn’t stick closely to the books. Kinnear appreciates this flexibility, noting that the extended format of a TV series allows deeper exploration of such enigmatic characters. This fresh take could bring new dimensions to Tom, aligning him more with the overarching storyline of the series.
Season 2 of ‘The Rings of Power’ promises to intensify the epic tales from its first season. As Sauron begins to regain his power and craft the Rings of Power, all characters, beloved or vulnerable, find themselves facing greater dangers. The narrative continues to weave the destinies of elves, dwarves, orcs, men, wizards, and Harfoots together as they struggle to protect whatโs most important to themโeach other.
The returning cast includes Morfydd Clark, Charles Edwards, Ismael Cruz Cordova, and others, with new additions such as Sam Hazeldine, Ciarรกn Hinds, and Tanya Moodie in significant roles.
As the story expands, it’s clear that the creators are not shying away from evolving the characters and plot to fit the television format. While this may not sit well with all Tolkien enthusiasts, it offers an opportunity to see Middle-earth in a new light. Keep an eye out for how these changes will impact the overall narrative and character dynamics in this much-anticipated season.
