Transformers and G.I. Joe: The Epic Crossover We’ve Been Waiting For
The excitement is building for the upcoming crossover movie between ‘Transformers’ and ‘G.I. Joe’. With Derek Connolly from ‘Jurassic World’ signed on to write the script, fans are eager to see what happens when these two powerhouse franchises come together. This development follows hints dropped in ‘Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’ that the worlds of the Cybertronians and G.I. Joe are intertwined.
Steve Weintraub of Collider recently spoke to producer di Bonaventura about what fans can expect from ‘Transformers’ in the next few years. He confirmed that if ‘Transformers One’, the origin story for characters like Optimus Prime and Megatron, is successful at the box office, the focus will be on continuing their stories in a trilogy. This film has already gained traction with a strong 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, fueled by positive reviews.
Di Bonaventura revealed that the next live-action feature will be the crossover event, emphasizing a deeper emotional connection with the robots. ‘Transformers One’ will influence how these characters are developed in future movies. He stated, “Subject to success, we’re looking at a sequel, and an animated version. However, our next live-action movie will feature both Transformers and G.I. Joe. We now understand the emotional depths of these robots better, which will guide our storytelling in the crossover.”
In ‘Rise of the Beasts’, characters Noah, played by Anthony Ramos, and Mirage, voiced by Pete Davidson, were set up for continued roles. Noah’s integration into G.I. Joe and his work on Mirage sets the stage for iconic Transformers like Optimus Prime (voiced by Peter Cullen) and Bumblebee to return alongside Maximals such as Optimus Primal (Ron Perlman).
The challenge lies in balancing the large cast. Di Bonaventura emphasized the need to focus more on the stories and motivations of the Transformers rather than just their reactions to human activities. He explained, “We’re trying to ensure both Transformers and Joes have enough room to shine without losing depth in their characterizations. The story will evolve from both the Joes’ and the Transformers’ viewpoints, which complicates the narrative but is necessary for a balanced, engaging plot.”
Although still early in development, this crossover promises to merge the best of both worlds, offering fans an action-packed narrative enriched with character-driven storytelling. ‘Transformers One’ is set to hit theaters this Friday, September 20. Make sure to catch it to get a glimpse of what’s to come in this thrilling union of ‘Transformers’ and ‘G.I. Joe’.
