Warner Bros. Pictures released the comprehensive theatrical trailer for ‘A Minecraft Movie’ on Tuesday, shifting marketing focus toward the origin story of the protagonist, Steve, played by Jack Black. The two-minute promotional spot provides the first detailed look at the narrative structure of the live-action adaptation, which was filmed primarily in Auckland, New Zealand. The production integrates live-action performances with extensive photorealistic CGI environments to replicate the voxel-based aesthetic of the source material, a technical challenge that required the collaboration of multiple visual effects vendors to translate low-resolution textures into cinematic assets.

Production filings suggest the project carries a budget exceeding $150 million, an investment aimed at capturing the massive installed base of the franchise, which remains the best-selling video game in history with over 300 million copies sold. Director Jared Hess has emphasized a commitment to “practicality” within the digital world, showcasing specific game mechanics such as Redstone circuitry, crafting tables, and Elytra wings in the new footage. The trailer also highlights the creature design for the Piglins and Ghasts, addressing earlier community feedback regarding the visual fidelity of the hostile mobs.

The film features an ensemble cast led by Jason Momoa as Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, alongside Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, and Sebastian Eugene Hansen. Warner Bros. Discovery has scheduled the film for a wide theatrical release on April 4, 2025, positioning it as a primary revenue driver for the studioโ€™s second-quarter earnings. This release marks a significant expansion for Mojang Studios, representing its first major theatrical venture since Microsoft acquired the developer for $2.5 billion in 2014.
