Twenty years ago, the groundbreaking film ‘Blade’ introduced the world to the first black cinematic superhero, marking a pivotal moment in movie history. Wesley Snipes starred in this horror action movie, which combined kung fu and vampire lore to create a unique genre-busting experience. As the film celebrates its 20th anniversary, let’s look back at its creation and legacy.

The actor and producer Wesley Snipes was initially interested in bringing ‘Black Panther’ to the big screen. However, given Marvel’s financial struggles at the time, ‘Blade’ was seen as a more feasible project. The film not only succeeded in its right but also set the stage for Marvel Enterprises’ future successes.

Peter Frankfurt and David Goyer, who worked behind the scenes, aimed to craft a script for a film that would cost less than $10 million. They envisioned a movie that felt tough and street-wise, like ‘Juice,’ but embedded within the Marvel universe. This vision, however, faced budget challenges as the concept demanded a more substantial investment.

According to Entertainment Weekly, a significant studio proposal initially questioned whether Blade could be portrayed by a white actor. Goyer responded firmly, saying ‘absolutely fโ€”ing not,’ emphasizing the importance of authenticity in the character’s portrayal. This decision paved the way for Snipes to embody the iconic role.

Mike De Luca, head of New Line studio, offered different budget levels based on potential leading actors: $40 million if Denzel Washington could star, $35 million for Wesley Snipes, and $20 million if Laurence Fishburne was cast. Ultimately, Snipes took on the role, and the rest is history.

Goyer had big dreams for ‘Blade,’ pitching it as the ‘Star Wars of black vampire films.’ He didn’t just see one movie; he envisioned a trilogy that would captivate audiences with its unique blend of action and supernatural elements.

As we remember ‘Blade’ today, it’s clear it was more than just a film. It broke barriers and set a precedent for black superheroes in cinema. Snipes’ portrayal of Blade wasn’t just about a superhero; it was a statement about diversity and representation in Hollywood. We’re proud of how ‘Blade’ carved a path for future films and showed that superheroes come in all colors.
