What If Edward Norton’s Hulk Had Faced Thanos? A Missed Spectacle for Fans

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has thrilled its audience with epic moments since 2008. Fans have witnessed everything from the Avengers’ first assembly to Thanos’ universe-altering snap. But there’s one ‘what if’ scenario that keeps fans talking: what if Edward Norton’s version of the Hulk had stayed on to battle Thanos?

Introduced in 2008, Edward Norton starred as the Hulk in ‘The Incredible Hulk’, presenting a version of the character marked by uncontrollable rage. This portrayal, many believe, could have added a raw, ferocious dimension to the Hulk’s showdown with Thanos in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’. Unlike Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk, who achieved a balance between his human and monster sides, Norton’s Hulk was a creature of pure fury.

A post on Threads didn’t hold back, stating, ‘We were robbed’ of potentially epic scenes between Norton’s Hulk and Thanos. The clash could have been more intense, with the Hulk charging relentlessly, perhaps leading to more devastating losses for the Avengers due to his lack of strategic thinking. Yet, the dramatic impact of such a head-to-head remains a popular topic among fans.

Why was Edward Norton replaced, though? After his 2008 performance, fans were eager to see more of Norton’s emotionally complex Bruce Banner, reminiscent of a classic monster movie figure. However, Marvel Studios wanted a star who fit better with the collaborative spirit of the existing cast. Kevin Feige of Marvel Studios mentioned the need for an actor who could seamlessly blend with the team, prompting the switch to Ruffalo.

Details from the book ‘MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios’ and a Reddit post reveal that Norton was often rewriting the script, clashing with others involved, particularly with Zak Penn. His insistence on changing the character’s path, especially the ending, ultimately led to his replacement.

Despite the change, the debates about what could have been continue to engage fans, reflecting on how a different Hulk might have altered one of cinema’s biggest battles.

You can stream Edward Norton’s ‘The Incredible Hulk’ alongside Mark Ruffalo’s ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ on Disney+ to compare the portrayals yourself.
