Why Anakin’s Lightsaber Didn’t Turn Red When He Became a Sith
Anakin Skywalkerโs lightsaber remained blue in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, even after he joined the dark side. This remained a mystery until ‘The Acolyte’ showcased a pivotal scene where Oshaโs blue lightsaber turned red as she killed her former master, symbolizing her fall to the dark side. This moment helped explain why Anakin’s lightsaber didnโt change color.
Kyber crystals are the key to a lightsaberโs color. Theyโre inside every lightsaber and they decide the color. When a Jedi or Sith uses their lightsaber, the color you see comes from these crystals. Red crystals, though, donโt just appear; they must be made through a process known as ‘bleeding’. This is where a dark side user channels intense emotions like anger and pain into the crystal, turning it red. Anakin didnโt do this during his time in ‘Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith’, which is why his lightsaber stayed blue, despite his dark actions.
In ‘The Acolyte’, Osha’s transformation of her lightsaber to red was more than just symbolism. As she was ending Sol’s life, her overwhelming emotions directly impacted the kyber crystal because it was exposed during their confrontation. This immediate and raw emotional outpouring is what changed the crystal’s color in real-time.
For practical reasons, Anakin’s lightsaber needed to remain blue for story continuity. In the original trilogy, Luke Skywalker inherits this blue lightsaber from his father. This required the prequels to maintain the color continuity to align with the established story.
The backstory of how Darth Vader got his red lightsaber is detailed in ‘Star Wars: Darth Vader #5’ by Charles Soule. Here, Vader undergoes the challenging process of bleeding a kyber crystal, which nearly brings him back to the light side. This shows just how tough and emotionally taxing the process can be, contrasting with Osha’s experience, who seemed fully prepared for her dark transition.
While we never saw Vaderโs lightsaber transformation on-screen, ‘The Acolyte’ gave us a glimpse of how dramatic and personal this process could be. Anakinโs journey didnโt include this, leaving him with his iconic blue lightsaber throughout the prequels.
