Why Ben Affleck’s Daredevil Missed Out on a ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Cameo
In the recent blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine, we saw some familiar faces like Wesley Snipes as Blade and Jennifer Garner reprising her role as Elektra. But one big name that was noticeably absent was Ben Affleck as Daredevil. Here’s why his appearance didn’t make the cut.
Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the brains behind the screenplay, once considered bringing back Affleck’s Daredevil. Kevin Smith mentioned it felt like a missed chance not having Affleck make a cameo. Although his Daredevil was initially on their list of potential appearances, the idea never fully took shape in the script, and Affleck wasn’t approached to reprise his role.
During an IndieWire interview, Reese shared that while they toyed with the idea, they never reached out to Affleck. It wasn’t part of the script or even a serious inquiry. Wernick echoed this, noting that Affleck’s name was there, but nothing concrete developed from it.
Reese explained that having Ryan Reynolds on board meant access to a stellar cast, making it easier to bring other stars into the fold. Yet, not everyone jumped at the chance. For instance, Robert Downey Jr. was approached for a cameo as Tony Stark but turned it down. This could be for the best, considering he’s now cast as Doctor Doom in the MCU, as Reese later mentioned in a chat with THR.
So, while Deadpool’s success might draw in many stars, some, like Downey, opt out. It goes to show that not every star is ready to jump back into their superhero suits. As for why Downey declined, Reese suspects it was due to his future with the MCU as Doctor Doom, though he doesn’t know for sure.
Deadpool & Wolverine continues to entertain us in theaters, but it’s interesting to think about what could have been with Affleck’s Daredevil joining the mix. Sometimes, the biggest plans don’t always make it to the big screen, but that just keeps things exciting for us, doesn’t it?
