Why Marvel’s CGI is Getting Worse: An Insider’s Take
A VFX artist recently explained why Marvel’s CGI quality has dropped. Early MCU movies wowed us with stunning visuals. But lately, the CGI has been underwhelming, making us wonder how a top franchise backed by Disney could fall so far.
Rassoul Edji, a VFX artist known for his work on ‘Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’ and ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians,’ shared his thoughts on X/Twitter. Responding to a post comparing 2008’s ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ to recent MCU films, he explained the decline. Rassoul said major studios now constantly change their plans, which affects the quality. He mentioned that we have more work in less time, leading to rushed and poor results.
When someone suggested the increasing demand for CGI is stretching VFX teams thin, Rassoul agreed. He said studios want more work done faster and cheaper, which is impossible without sacrificing quality.
Great CGI isn’t just about big budgets. ‘Godzilla: Minus One’ winning the Oscar for Best VFX over films like ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ and ‘Napoleon’ surprised everyone. Directors like Takashi Yamazaki, with strong VFX backgrounds, show that planning and understanding VFX make a huge difference. Rassoul pointed out that directors with a clear vision and good VFX knowledge can produce amazing results.
Rassoul’s insights reveal a lot about the industry’s challenges. The pressure to produce more, faster, and cheaper is hurting the quality of the work. Good CGI needs careful planning and a team that understands the technology well. It’s not just about the money but about the right leadership and time to get things right.

VFX artist here, heres what happened: Clients continually change the brief, shot design and planning are no longer a priority, and we have a lot more work to get through in a shorter amount of time. We have and can create work better than back in the day, it just needs the right… https://t.co/ws2RTthaUV
