Why the MCU’s Potential Spider-Man and Captain Marvel Hookup Is a Bad Idea

Imagine seeing Spider-Man and Captain Marvel together, not just battling bad guys but maybe even going on a date. It sounds strange, right? That’s because it is, especially if you only know these heroes through the movies where Tom Holland plays Peter Parker and Brie Larson is Carol Danvers. But for those of us who’ve dived deep into the pages of Marvel Comics, this isn’t so far-fetched.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, some comic book stories come to life, but Kevin Feige seems to think that Peter and Carol dating crosses a line. Still, in the comic series Avenging Spider-Man, these two actually do go on a couple of dates. Yes, you read that right. After Carol loses her powers, she teams up with Peter, and amidst their crime-fighting, Peter grows fond of her and even asks her out. Despite a rocky start (Carol was not easily convinced), they manage to spend some quality time together, though it doesn’t end in romance.

Their dates don’t lead to anything serious. Carol ends things, but they continue to fight the good fight together, even against Venom, who adds a whole new layer to the drama. Venom bonds with Captain Marvel and feels her emotions, leading to an awkward reveal about her feelings for Peter. When Peter teases Carol later with ‘You like me,’ she only has a curt ‘Shut up’ for him.

If this storyline surprised you, you’re not alone. When a YouTube Shorts from the channel โ€˜@ComicsUnlockedโ€™ talked about it, we all had a laugh. Comments flew in from viewers. One viewer noted how Spider-Man not only handled Venom but also had a unique charm, or ‘rizz,’ with Carol. Another joked about how Peter’s luck with the ladies seemed almost supernatural.

Avenging Spider-Man #9 and #10, penned by Kelly Sue DeConnick with art by Terry Dodson, introduced this plot in 2012. It gave us a glimpse of what could be if the movies ever dared to follow this path.

But will we ever see such a pairing in the movies? Probably not. It seems too out there, even for the expansive Marvel Multiverse. We can handle aliens and gods, but Peter Parker and Carol Danvers as an item feels like a stretch. But then again, who knows what the future holds? After all, the heart of the story always lies in its possibility, no matter how wild it may seem.
