Will ‘The Boys’ End with a Bang on the Big Screen?
The popular TV show ‘The Boys’ might conclude with a blockbuster movie, as some cast members have suggested, but many of us feel it’s time to wrap up this adaptation without extending it further. During an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, Laz Alonso, who plays Mother’s Milk, shared his unsuccessful attempts to persuade showrunner Eric Kripke to end the series with a movie. Antony Starr, known as Homelander, also expressed his support for this idea, excited about the potential for a full theatrical release.
‘The Boys’ season 4 has received mixed reactions. While it delivers a solid set of episodes, it seems the show has become too comfortable with its characters and universe. With one spinoff already released and another in production, the push for a movie feels like a stretch for some fans. The concern is that extending the franchise might lead to it overstaying its welcome.
The notion of making a movie to conclude the series after a cliffhanger in season five is intriguing. Yet, often actors’ pitches do not make it past the discussion stage. With Amazon gradually moving into theatrical releases and seeking to boost its portfolio of attractive intellectual properties, the temptation to turn ‘The Boys,’ which initially mocked superhero franchises, into something similar is real.
In the current landscape where TV shows struggle with bloated budgets and short seasons, the call for longer series runs contradicts the desire for concise, impactful storytelling. Season three of ‘The Boys’ slowed down plot progression, focusing heavily on the dynamic between Homelander and Butcher. This has led many of us to prefer a straightforward approach to the upcoming fifth season, aiming for a strong finish without the need for a theatrical send-off.
Even Lucasfilm chose to complete the main arc of ‘The Mandalorian’ within three seasons before moving to a cinematic format, planning a return to theaters in 2026. This strategic move could serve as a sensible model for ‘The Boys,’ emphasizing that sometimes, less is more when it comes to storytelling in beloved series.
