X-Men ’97 Season 2 has been in development long before the first season premiered in March 2024. Brad Winderbaum from Marvel Studios shared that the new episodes are now in the animatic stage. Director Jake Castorena recently gave another update on the production.

In an interview with ComicBookโ€™s Phase Zero podcast, Castorena confirmed that everyone is working hard on X-Men ’97 Season 2. Despite the hype, no one is rushing. Castorena compared the process to baking a cake, saying, ‘We’re baking a cake right now. Nobody wants to ruin a cake. I don’t want to ruin a cake. Let us bake it.’ He added that the cake is well underway and being made as we speak.

Beau DeMayo had written much of the second season before his departure, but he is no longer heavily involved. Castorena mentioned they rolled right into Season 2 while still working on Season 1, ensuring continuity and dedication to the project.

They aim to stick with what people loved about the original X-Men: The Animated Series. Castorena promised to keep things in line with the ’90s cartoon, adding some fresh but familiar takes. He explained, ‘It’s all about, we’re on a team. It’s something we realize that we give ourselves false parameters to make sure we’re checking our math. Whether it’s nerd math, geographical math, whatever it is. We gave ourselves false parameters to make sure to keep us in check, to make sure we’re not going too far away from the original DNA that is the OG show. But also adapting it. Fresh, but familiar.’

Season 2 might adapt several comic book storylines, focusing on the Season 1 finale’s cliffhanger. The final episode ended with X-Men members in different timelines. Cyclops and Jean Grey are in 3960 AD, and Professor X, Magneto, Rogue, Beast, and Nightcrawler are in 3000 BC. Storm, Wolverine, and Morph’s locations are still unknown.

Forge seems to be planning a new group of mutants, thinking the others died in an explosion. This hints at the return of Apocalypse, who appeared in the mid-credits scene, suggesting he might resurrect Gambit.

The new season may feature three timelines: past, present, and future. This setup could help them stop Apocalypse by meeting different versions of him. The loss of Wolverine’s adamantium skeleton may also be addressed, with Storm and Morph possibly helping him heal.

Details about the second season are still emerging, so we should take these assumptions with caution. We can expect more plot details soon. All episodes of X-Men ’97 Season 1 are available on Disney+. There’s no word yet on when Season 2 will be released.
