Zack Snyder Faces Backlash Despite Rebel Moon Spinoff Showing Franchise Growth
Zack Snyder’s role as a filmmaker has sparked debate, particularly after his projects in the DC universe. His latest ventures, two Rebel Moon films on Netflix, haven’t won the hearts of viewers. Known for his dramatic visual style, the films aimed high but were criticized for their uninspiring characters and lackluster execution, making them some of Snyder’s least favorable reviews.
Despite the criticism, Snyder isn’t slowing down. He’s planning a director’s cut for both movies, releasing on August 2, in hopes of swaying opinions. Alongside, he announced a spinoff prequel podcast titled ‘The Seneschal’, set 500 years before the Rebel Moon films, detailing the origins of the ‘Jimmys’ – robot knights from the movie voiced by Anthony Hopkins.
The announcement of ‘The Seneschal’, which stars voices like Ella Purnell, Jason Isaacs, and Peter Serafinowicz, hasn’t sparked much interest among us. The feedback on social platforms like X shows a clear disinterest in extending the franchise, with many of us expressing frustration over the continuous expansion of what seems to be a dwindling series.
In an intriguing twist, the Rebel Moon universe is set to expand further with a third movie already in scripting. Kurt Johnstad, one of the writers, mentioned to Cinemablend that the plot for the next sequel is laid out and parts of the script are already written. This suggests that regardless of current sentiments, the Rebel Moon saga is far from over.
For those interested, the current films are available on Netflix, and the podcast ‘The Seneschal’ will premiere on July 29 on popular apps like Spotify and Apple Music, with new episodes weekly.
As for me, while the promise of new adventures in the Rebel Moon universe is exciting on paper, the real test will be whether these new entries can rejuvenate interest in Snyder’s sci-fi vision. Only time will tell if the upcoming director’s cuts and podcast can turn the tide of public opinion.
