Zack Snyder’s ‘Justice League’ Sequel Plans Just Confirm We’re Better Without the SnyderVerse
Zack Snyder’s vision for the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) was one of the most debated topics in superhero cinema. His dark and intense take on well-loved characters like Batman and Superman divided us deeply. Some thought it was a breath of fresh air, while others believed it distorted the essence of these iconic heroes.
Snyder argued that a non-lethal Batman was ‘boring’ and a merciful Superman was ‘unrealistic.’ He suggested that Superman should have no qualms about killing Zod, and that Batmanโs violent streak was necessary. Many of us felt this was a betrayal of the characters’ original virtues.
Moreover, Snyder had plans that continued to stir controversy, like a romantic angle between Batman and Lois Lane following Superman’s demise in ‘Batman v Superman.’ He imagined them falling in love and even having a child. This subplot, however, was cut short by studio decisions, so it never made it to the screen.
Snyder also had ideas for a Wonder Woman film that never reached the scripting stage. It would have depicted Diana exploring the world beyond Themyscira, engaging in numerous battles, and dealing with the loss of mortal lovers.
His ultimate plan for the Justice League sequels included a complex narrative where after averting a natural disaster, each hero pursues their own path. Aquaman and Mera aimed to consolidate Atlantis’ kingdoms. Flash and Cyborg would tackle legal challenges for Henry Allen. Wonder Woman intended to return to Themyscira, and Superman, secretly alive, discovers Lois is pregnant.
The narrative would climax with Superman turning evil, prompting Batman to seek out Kryptonite with Jokerโs help. The final showdown was meant to feature an alliance of men, Atlanteans, Amazons, and Green Lanterns against formidable foes, revealing grand twists like Zeus being a Kryptonian.
Snyder’s ambition was to blend mythologies across divine and superhero realms, which certainly would have elicited strong responses from both fans and critics. Given the extensive deviations from traditional character portrayals and storyline, it’s a relief to some of us that these plans remain unfulfilled. Perhaps it’s for the best that we moved beyond the SnyderVerse.
