Lucasfilm Congratulates Marvel As ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Shatters ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ All-Time Domestic Box Office Record
For nearly five decades, Hollywood’s most prominent blockbuster filmmakers have celebrated monumental commercial milestones by passing the torch with artistic grace. Ever since George Lucas and Steven Spielberg began exchanging playful, full-page trade tributes during the late 1970s, the tradition of honoring a rival who captures cinema’s ultimate financial summit has remained one of the industry’s most endearing rituals. That celebratory spirit has once again taken center stage as Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios continue to rewrite box office history with ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’.
Back in December 2015, director J.J. Abrams revitalized the cinematic landscape when ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ arrived in theaters and established a domestic benchmark once thought to be untouchable. Amassing a staggering $936.6 million across its theatrical run, the space opera reigned supreme as the highest-grossing release in North American history for more than a decade. Even historic industry titans such as ‘Avengers: Endgame’ and ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ ultimately fell short of toppling that North American crown.
That ten-year reign has officially come to an end. After 47 days in theaters, ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ pushed its domestic cumulative total to $936.77 million, officially surpassing ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ to become the highest-grossing movie of all time at the domestic box office. Ever since the web-slinging sequel stormed the global box office to eclipse the $2 billion threshold in record time, box office analysts tracked whether Peter Parker could pull off the historic upset.
Rather than letting the changing of the guard pass quietly, Lucasfilm embraced tradition by extending high-flying honors to the team behind the wall-crawler. The studio unveiled custom tribute artwork across social channels depicting Spider-Man raising his fists in victory above the skyline of New York City, flanked by two Resistance X-wing starfighters soaring overhead. Below the hero, the poster featured an affectionate crossover message: โThe Force is strong with you! Congratulations from Lucasfilm.โ
The official Lucasfilm tribute accompanied the image with a direct quote referencing Darth Vader’s famous line from ‘Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back’. The statement declared, โImpressive. Most Impressive. From a galaxy far, far away, everyone at Lucasfilm sends massive congratulations to Destin, Tom, everyone at Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios and the entire team behind Spider-Man: Brand New Day on setting a new domestic box office record and taking the crown from Star Wars: The Force Awakens.โ
The warm gesture honors a long lineage that started when Spielberg congratulated Lucas in 1977 after ‘Star Wars’ overtook ‘Jaws’ in domestic ticket sales. Lucas returned the favor when ‘E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial’ claimed the record six years later, forging a tradition that has seen James Cameron, Kevin Feige, and Kathleen Kennedy exchange commemorative art over the years. When ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ dethroned ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ for the biggest domestic opening weekend in 2018, Lucasfilm similarly commissioned artwork showing Rey passing her lightsaber to Iron Man.
For director Destin Daniel Cretton and franchise star Tom Holland, the milestone puts an exclamation point on an unprecedented theatrical run. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ initially launched in late July with an explosive $360 million domestic debut, eclipsing ‘Avengers: Endgame’ for the largest opening weekend ever recorded. The superhero blockbuster went on to dominate the top spot for six consecutive weekends while amassing $2.45 billion worldwide, cementing its place as the third-highest-grossing film in cinematic history.
With the web-slinger still drawing audiences to theaters, speculation has shifted toward whether the film can become the first release in history to reach $1 billion in North America alone. While that summit remains a tall order as the theatrical window winds down, taking the all-time domestic crown from the galaxy far, far away ensures that Peter Parker’s latest journey is already preserved in Hollywood lore.
