‘Resident Evil’ Scores Massive $150 Million Global Tracking Projection Ahead of Release
Zach Cregger has enjoyed a meteoric ascent in the modern horror landscape, quickly establishing himself as one of the genre’s most singular and ambitious filmmakers. After surprising critics and moviegoers alike with his 2022 breakout hit ‘Barbarian’ and earning widespread acclaim with last year’s psychological thriller ‘Weapons’, the director has stepped onto the major studio canvas. Now, all eyes across the industry are turned toward Sony Pictures and Constantin Film’s upcoming survival horror reboot, ‘Resident Evil’.
Capcom’s iconic video game property has spent more than two decades navigating an expansive yet notoriously uneven journey in movie theaters. While Paul W.S. Anderson’s six-film run starring Milla Jovovich collected over $1.2 billion worldwide, the franchise progressively prioritized stylized sci-fi action over the dread-inducing tension that defined the games. Following the muted reception of 2021’s ‘Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City’, fans have remained hungry for a live-action adaptation committed to claustrophobic, pulse-pounding survival terror.
That long-simmering anticipation appears to be translating into an extraordinary commercial event for cinemas this autumn. Brand-new box office tracking data indicates that Zach Cregger’s ‘Resident Evil’ is currently pacing toward a massive worldwide debut between $120 million and $150 million next week. The film commenced advance ticket sales across several key international territories this week, where pre-orders for IMAX and other premium large-format screens are generating substantial early business.
Should the film hit anywhere near the upper limits of those estimates, it will shatter box office records across the entire history of the cinematic property. For comparison, the highest domestic opening weekend for the brand remains 2010’s ‘Resident Evil: Afterlife’, which debuted with $26.6 million in North American theaters. Early domestic projections for Cregger’s R-rated reboot have placed its opening weekend between $35 million and $50 million, comfortably on pace to secure the largest domestic launch the franchise has ever seen.
Produced with an estimated $80 million budget, the upcoming reboot intentionally avoids retreading the well-trodden arcs of iconic series regulars like Leon S. Kennedy or Jill Valentine. Instead, the narrative follows Bryan, an ordinary medical courier played by Austin Abrams, who finds himself thrust into a grueling fight for survival during a routine delivery through Raccoon City. Backed by a supporting cast that includes Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser, the production puts a heavy emphasis on resource scarcity, frantic gunplay, and creature encounters.
Cregger has been open about his philosophy for the project, noting that he aimed to translate the physical panic and pacing of playing the games directly onto the big screen. “I thought fans of these games, like me, would be thrilled that somebody was coming along and turning ‘Resident Evil’ into a survival horror movie,” the filmmaker admitted to IGN, acknowledging that the story serves as a visceral, self-contained journey through hell rather than a point-by-point retread. That creative discipline seems to be paying dividends as audiences prepare for an unapologetically tense theatrical ride.
With Sony and Constantin ramping up anticipation through new promotional posters highlighting both IMAX and 4DX presentations, the film is positioned as a premier visual and acoustic attraction for horror enthusiasts. The reboot will celebrate its official world premiere at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, on September 17 before expanding into more than 3,500 theaters worldwide on September 18. If its roaring global pre-sales and bullish tracking projections are any indication, Cregger is poised to deliver not only a historic weekend for Capcom’s flagship property, but also one of the year’s defining horror milestones.
