Tariq signed on to direct Ali in 2021 before departing, while Ali spent seven years attached to the stagnant project. Instead of discarding extensive combat training, Ali teamed with Tariq to create an original thriller.

Reflecting on his departure from the superhero genre, “If they wanted to do it, we would’ve done it,” Ali explained in an interview with The Guardian, adding, “The best way I can answer this question is, when I look at what is for me, is it was either this or that – and I’ll take this.” That turning point restored their creative freedom.

Discussing their serendipitous reunion, Variety reported that Ali relished the freedom of an original concept: “When I look at this and ‘Blade,’ I couldn’t have done both, and the reason this even exists is because that project fell apart and Bassam had the time, space, energy, and focus to go and write this and then re-approach me.” This partnership ensured an uncompromised artistic vision.
