Where Was Netflix’s ‘East of Eden’ Filmed? Inside the Global Locations
Few literary epics evoke the grandeur and psychological complexity of the American frontier quite like John Steinbeck’s 1952 masterpiece. The multi-generational tale of guilt, rivalry, and human frailty has captivated readers for decades with its evocative portraits of rural agricultural labor and fragile moral codes. Bringing such a monumental narrative to contemporary television demands an uncompromising artistic commitment to period authenticity and expansive cinematic scale.
Ever since Elia Kazan helmed the celebrated 1955 film adaptation starring James Dean, the Trask family saga has occupied a revered position in Hollywood history. Decades later, screenwriter Zoe Kazan undertook the deeply personal endeavor of penning a complete seven-episode miniseries that finally explores the sprawling novel across its full generational expanse. With Academy Award nominee Florence Pugh attached to star alongside Christopher Abbott and Mike Faist, expectations surrounding the lavish production immediately soared.
Yet rather than returning to California’s historic Salinas Valley, the ambitious production embarked on a surprising cross-hemisphere journey to New Zealand. Directors Garth Davis and Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre discovered that the island nation offered an exceptional blend of untouched terrain and preserved architecture. Across several months of principal photography, New Zealand served as the primary backdrop for early 20th-century America.
Recreating Salinas Valley Across New Zealand’s South Island
To replicate the sun-bleached expanse of Steinbeck’s Salinas basin, the production team journeyed across New Zealand’s South Island to harness the raw beauty of Central Otago. The region’s dry, rolling hills and sun-baked pastures mirrored the golden agricultural farm valleys where the Trask and Hamilton families forge their tangled destinies. This untamed landscape provided an earthy, naturalistic atmosphere that grounded the harsh emotional betrayals driving the narrative.
As reported by IF Magazine, the shoot officially got underway in late 2024 under the working title ‘Timshel’, representing a profound milestone for the creative team. Confronting both her own family heritage and Steinbeck’s words, Kazan remarked, โIn the process of bringing this family saga to life, the resonance of my own familial connection to the material has not been lost on meโ. The production quickly established operations across multiple regional hubs.
In January 2025, cameras rolled in ลamaru, where the town’s renowned Victorian Precinct offered the ultimate period setting for the historical drama. Crew members blanketed paved roads in gravel, brought in vintage automobiles and draft horses, and cast local residents whose rugged beards helped establish early 1900s verisimilitude. Additional sequences were captured at the ลamaru Steam and Rail Society railway yard, creating a rich transportation backdrop for incoming travelers.
Filming subsequently expanded into the nearby coastal city of Dunedin to construct the story’s bustling urban environments. Prominent thoroughfares like Lower Stuart Street stood in for eastern city avenues, framed by the grand Flemish Renaissance facade of the historic Dunedin Railway Station. The production also utilized Queen’s Garden for exterior sequences, turning public promenades into authentic snapshots of a rapidly modernizing society.
Coastal Transformation and Florence Pugh’s Cathy Ames
Following regional shoots across Otago, the production traveled north to Tฤmaki Makaurau Auckland in February 2025. The crew established a four-day base in the heritage-rich seaside community of Devonport, specifically focusing on residential quarters near Cheltenham Beach. Local teams repainted several century-old homes, including an iconic 1906 villa along Cheltenham Road, while temporarily laying gravel across the streets to erase signs of modern living.
At the epicenter of this historic transformation stands Pugh’s magnetic interpretation of the notorious antihero Cathy Ames. During an insightful panel discussion hosted by The Atlantic, Pugh reflected on humanizing one of American literature’s most enigmatic figures, explaining that it was โmy job to try and get you guys to sympathize and maybe fall in love with her a little bitโ. The actress further elaborated on her connection to the narrative, stating, โI do think there’s something really empowering about seeing a woman scream in the face of her destinyโ.
By weaving New Zealand’s rugged rural vistas together with meticulously restored streetscapes, the limited series delivers an immersive visual tapestry that honors Steinbeck’s sweeping vision. Transporting a quintessential American chronicle halfway across the globe proved to be an inventive creative triumph for Netflix and its ambitious creative team. The resulting environments allow the timeless family tragedy to breathe with authentic historical scale and poignant emotional resonance.
