That underlying commentary provided the foundational framework for showrunner and director Philipp Kadelbach to construct a contemporary screen adaptation.

Kadelbach and co-creator Elena Lyubarskaya have reimagined the setting into an urgent speculative future defined by devastating climate collapse. Berlin has fractured into an isolated city-state where natural waterways like the Spree have shriveled to dust and relentless heat waves punish the disenfranchised population. While millions suffer in squalid street encampments, a tiny political and financial oligarchy lives comfortably inside a hermetically sealed, air-conditioned dome erected over the historic city center.

Bringing this vision of urban decay to life required an extensive 110-day shoot spanning multiple cities across the Czech Republic and Germany. Working alongside Czech service outfit Sirena Film, the production transformed historical streets in Prague, Brno, and Ústí nad Labem into futuristic Berlin districts before filming key exterior sequences around Kreuzberg. Under executive producer Daniel Brühl, the team prioritized atmospheric practical environments and immersive set design by Matthias Müsse over purely digital backdrops.

That tactile world is further enhanced by an evocative musical score from composer Michael Kadelbach, whose television soundtrack was released via Hollywood Records ahead of the premiere.
